Tanabata Festival - July 7th

Tanabata (七夕, meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese star festival, originating from the Chinese Qixi Festival. It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi/Ushikai (Altair). According to legend, the Milky Way, a river of stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. ほしのせかい の おうさま てんてい には　おりひめ という ひとりむすめ が おりました。ひめは てんてい の いいつけ で、あけてもくれても はた を おって よ にも うつくしいふく を つくりつづけます。

いそがしいひめには、かみ をゆう ひま も　 けしょう をする ゆとり も ありません。

忙しい（いそがしい）busy　  髪（かみ）hair　　暇（ひま）spare time  　化粧（けしょう）makeup

てんてい は あるひ そんな ひめ を かわいそうに おもうと おむこさん を もらってやることに しました。てんてい が おむこさんに えらんだのは、あまのがわのほとり で、うしのせわ をしている はたらきもの の うしかいという わかもの でした。

うつくしい おりひめ と りりしい うしかい は ひきあわされた とたんに おたがいを すきに なりました。

ところが ふたりは いっしょに くらすようになると てんていのことなど きにも かけなくなったのです。

ふたりcouple (orihime & ushikai)　 いっしょにくらす live  together 　  　

おりひめ　は はたをおること を わすれ　じぶんは きかざること に ばかり むちゅうに なってしまいました。

 はたを織る（はたをおる）weave　  じぶん oneself (Weaving Princess)        きかざる dress up  　 夢中（むちゅう）devotion

うしかいも うしのせわなど ほったらかしに しはじめたので あれほど たいせつにしていた うしは びょうきに かかってしまいました。

ほったらかし leaving alone　  たいせつ important      病気（びょうき）sickness

てんてい は　たまりかねて 「そんなにあそんでばかりいて どうするのだ。すこしは  まじめにはたらくがよい。」とふたりを たしなめましたが おりひめ　と うしかい は みみ を かそうとも  いたしません。


あそんでばかり play around all the time      まじめに seriously     はたらく to work　　たしなめました　to reprove

はらにすえかねた てんていは ついに ふたり を むりやり ひきはなしてしまいました。

むりやり by force  　　　

うしかい に あえなくなった おりひめ は へやに こもって なきくらすばかり。はたも おろうとしないので てんていのふく は　たちまち　みすぼらしくなっていきます。

泣き暮らす（なきくらす）spend one's time in tears　　　ふく clothes  　　みすぼらしく raggedly

うしかい も いえに こもって おりひめ の ことばかり かんがえているので　めんどう を みてもらえない うし は　いまにも しにそうです。

うし cows        しにそう almost dead

こまりはてた てんてい は　さじを　なげると　ふたり に こういいわたしたのです。

こまりはてた be at a complete loss as to what to do 　さじをなげる give up


「しかたがない。おまえたちが もとどおり はたらくならば　ねんにいちど だけ　あえるようにしてやろう。」

はたらく to work       年に一度（ねんにいちど）once a year

そのことば に　おりひめ　とうしかい は　こころをいれかえると　けんめいに　はたらきはじめました。

ことば words     心を入れかえる（こころをいれかえる）reform oneself     けんめいに intently

こうして てんてい の ふく は　みるみる りっぱになり 　うしは　げんき を とりもどしました。

ふく clothes       りっぱ fine　　げんき healthy

やがて まちにまった ひ が おとずれました。おりひめ と うしかいは それぞれの かわぎしにかけよります。が、ひろいあまのがわ を どうやって わたったらよいのでしょう。

まちにまったひ the long-awaited day 　　かわぎし riverside 

ふたり が うろたえていますと どこからともなく かささぎ の むれ が そら を おおいはじめました。そして かささぎ は　たがい の つばさ を　さしかわすと　かわのうえ に　はし を かけてくれたのでした。

かささぎのむれ flocks of magpies      翼（つばさ）wings　　かわのうえ over the river         橋（はし）bridge

ふたりは こうして いまでも ねんに１ど しちがつなのか になると　たがいの おもい をたしかめあうのです。そらを みあげて ごらんなさい。あまのがわ の みぎ と ひだり にきらめいているほしが おりひめ と うしかい ですよ。

The judge was a Japanese student at MUN. She said it was really difficult to choose because everyone's entry was so good. I am also very impressed at how much improvement that I am seeing in everyone's Japanese level.
